On July 2, 2024, the Munich City Council officially decided to rename the Munich Immigration Office (District Administration Department (KVR)). It will now be called the "Service Office for Immigration and Citizenship". The new name is intended to better reflect the authority's diverse tasks and its long-standing, service-oriented work. In fact, however, Munich residents with administrative knowledge must ask themselves what exactly is the "service" about an authority that leaves applications unprocessed for years and cannot be reached by phone or email.
What does this mean for you?
The changeover to the new name will take place gradually. It is therefore possible that you will still receive letters or documents with the old name “Foreigners’ Authority” during the transition period. Important: All residence documents issued remain valid and customers do not need to take any further action due to the name change. This changeover is expected to last until 2025.
New online services
Parallel to the name change, the "Service Center" for Immigration and Naturalization is further expanding its digital offering. You can now apply for the following services online at the Munich Immigration Office:
Opportunity Card : This residence permit is aimed at people from third countries who are looking for work, training or measures to recognize a professional qualification in Germany.
Residence permit for employment with professional experience : Skilled workers with professional experience from third countries can apply for a residence permit for employment online. The introduction of the opportunity card and the AE with professional experience into the online system of the KVR Munich is only logical following the legal introduction of the residence permit.
Further information can be found on the official website of the service center (Munich Immigration Office) .
