The state of Lower Saxony has taken an important step towards improving skilled immigration: it will set up a central immigration authority that will deal specifically with the immigration of skilled workers. Lower Saxony is thus following suit and joining the list of federal states that have already introduced similar authorities, such as North Rhine-Westphalia (see Central Office for Skilled Immigration NRW ) and Bavaria (see Central Office for the Immigration of Skilled Workers Bavaria ) .
The introduction of a central immigration authority in Lower Saxony is a significant step towards making procedures more efficient for employers and international skilled workers. Until now, the immigration of skilled workers in Lower Saxony has often been challenging, as the state has a total of 52 individual immigration authorities. This led to a high level of effort for employers, who often had difficulty finding the right authority and making communication smooth.
The central authority will in particular take over the so-called accelerated skilled worker procedure (see also our VISAGUARD guide to the accelerated skilled worker procedure ). This procedure aims to simplify the immigration of qualified skilled workers and to supply the labor market with urgently needed workers more quickly. Companies benefit from a clear and uniform structure that greatly simplifies communication and the processing of the necessary steps (see Section 81a of the Residence Act).
It is not yet known exactly when the new central immigration authority in Lower Saxony will start its work. Nevertheless, the announcement is a positive signal that shows that the state is actively working to improve skilled immigration and make Lower Saxony more attractive as a location for international skilled workers.
